I just got the two-week notice from Dreamwidth encouraging me to renew my paid account. I'm still undecided, but for the moment I'm leaning toward not renewing. I don't think the experiment has been successful: the audience for my private writings has not materialized, and other systems are better places than this one for my public writings. That doesn't leave much value for me in having a paid account.

Right now seems like a good time to re-post this link; it's a couple years old, but the issues haven't changed much.
The Terrible Secret of Livejournal
I wish no harm on the community in general nor (with a couple very limited exceptions) any individuals in it... but I sure see a whole lot of people these days flashing around what they think are "Get out of jail free" cards, with inscriptions like "Fair Use" and "Fictional Characters," and maybe some of those people would actually benefit from learning exactly how well "Get out of jail free" cards work in the world outside our borders.

I don't think there's much point granting me "access" when you subscribe... as far as I can tell it has no effect. The only way for me to read your Livejournal entries through here is if I syndicate the RSS feed, I can do that with or without your permission, and it only shows public entries. Similarly, when I "subscribe" to an OpenID it doesn't seem to have any effect. I don't know why the system even allows us to do these things.
ETA: sounds like it does have some effect after all (see comments). Probably not the effect you intend, though.
