Exciting! My guess is that as you say, it's something to do with replying from within Gmail. Are you clicking a "click here to reply" link in a message you receive through Gmail? It may be looking at the referer header or something. I'll see about reporting it, but my guess is that the powers that be will consider this a low-priority issue.
